Explanations

Why is it needed?

A pet cardiology exam is a medical examination that checks the condition of an animal's heart. This is necessary to determine whether the animal has heart or blood vessel problems or diseases, such as:

  1. Heart muscle dysfunction (myocardial dysfunction): when the heart muscle cannot contract effectively, which can lead to heart failure or cardiac asthma.

  2. Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias): when the heart contracts chaotically or too frequently, which can lead to heart failure, stroke, or death.

  3. Blood vessel disorders (aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis): when narrowing or fusion of blood vessels can cause increased heart load and heart failure.

  4. Pericardial (lining) disorders (pericarditis, effusions): when there is fluid or inflammation in the lining of the heart, which can lead to heart failure.

Heart examinations can be performed using echocardiography, electrocardiography, blood tests, catheterization, blood pressure measurement, etc. This is done in order to identify any pathology and begin treatment, if necessary.

Why is it important?

It is important to perform cardiac examinations on your pet, as this allows you to:

  1. Detect cardiovascular problems at an early stage: A cardiological examination can detect cardiovascular diseases or problems that may not be visible from the outside. This allows treatment to begin in the early stages, which can reduce the risk of serious health problems and death.

  2. Maintain your pet's well-being: A cardiac exam can help your pet maintain its well-being. For example, early detection and treatment of heart rhythm disorders can ensure that your pet remains active and energetic.

  3. Ensure longevity: With timely cardiac examinations and treatment of diseases or health problems, your pet can live longer and healthier.

  4. Be responsible for your pet's well-being: Veterinary examinations are important to ensure that your pet is healthy and feeling well.

  5. Heart disease can be transmitted to other animals, so by getting your pet checked and undergoing the necessary tests, you are protecting both your pet and other animals around them.

How often should tests be performed?

The frequency may vary depending on the pet's age, breed, health status, and risk factors. Generally, healthy adult pets are recommended to undergo cardiac examinations every 1-2 years, but older pets or those with risk factors (e.g., hypertension, heart disease) are recommended to undergo examinations more frequently. One of the best places to consult a cardiologist is a veterinary clinic. Our specialists can determine recommendations for a specific pet and provide recommendations on the frequency of examinations.
